Did you know that only 33% of Americans have a written financial plan?
As professionals passionate about the positive impact of financial planning on individuals and families, this stat makes us cringe. So why don’t more people have a written financial plan?
Though a complete answer would be multi-faceted, one factor is that people have been taught that personal finance feels bad. It is about restriction or brings up shame, guilt, or lost opportunities.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t help.
B.J. Fogg, a researcher at Stanford and the author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes that Change Everything, tells us that people change most effectively by feeling good. Positive emotion is the change-maker, not negative emotion…(cont.)
…Successful personal finance has much to do with successful routines and habit formation. Contributing to your 401k is routine behavior. Regularly checking in on your spending and cash flow is a habit. Saving for goals like travel, a new home, college, or retirement requires intention, planning, and regular follow-through. Even scheduling and attending our regular financial planning meetings, like biannual checkups or trips to the dentist, is a habit that enables you to productively and proactively engage with your finances.
And, you guessed it, creating and maintaining a written financial plan is a habit. Importantly, it’s a habit that you have invested in developing for the benefit of your current and future self. Go you!
